Seven Things To Inspect Before Reusing Shipping Containers For Modifications

In recent years, shipping container modification has become a very popular solution. Rather than letting them sink to the bottom of the sea, this unique transformation gives these containers a new lease of life, allowing them to be used for a huge array of commercial and domestic opportunities.

Here at Modulate Containers, we specialise in modular building, helping to transform these shipping containers into everything from offices and ablution blocks to cafes and tiny homes. We also sell shipping containers for storage purposes, workshops, lunchrooms and much more. However, before choosing a container to repurpose, carrying out a comprehensive inspection is essential.

Our experienced team conduct a thorough examination before completing any shipping container modification. We prefer to utilise New Build (NB), ‘like new,’ or A-grade solutions when modular building as this guarantees the very best quality for our customers. However, we do also offer high-quality used containers for those who are on a budget.

What do we examine when carrying out an examination, though? We thought we would take a closer look.

Reusing Containers: Seven Things To Inspect

No matter what the shipping container modification might be before we undertake any kind of modular building, we will thoroughly examine the exterior and interior of the container. By law, each of these containers is required to meet a set level of standards for design and maintenance before they can be used commercially.

However, while these standards will ensure the container is seaworthy for use in transporting goods, which might not mean they will be able to be repurposed. That is why we undertake a seven step review to ensure our clients can enjoy the very best modified containers possible.

Step One: Exterior and undercarriage

Before undertaking any modular building project, the first thing that we do is conduct a comprehensive review of the exterior and undercarriage of the container. This is a very important step and helps to determine whether the container will be able to withstand the elements and remain operating as it should for many years to come.

During this stage, our experienced team will carefully examine the entire outside of the unit. They will be looking for signs of wear and tear, rust and areas of concern. This process will then review the support beams, ensuring that they are visible and intact. This will ensure that the unit will be able to maintain its structural integrity during any of the works.

Step Two: Examine the doors

Once our team is satisfied that it will be able to undergo shipping container modification, the next step is to carry out an inspection of the doors. This will review both the inside and outside, ensuring that they are able to meet the demands required.

This inspection includes ensuring that the locking mechanisms are not only attached and working but that they are also secure and reliable. Alongside the locks, we will also be on the lookout for things such as different coloured bonding material, loose bolts, signs of previous repair, and whether there are any plates covered cavities.

This is another crucial step, as we know that our customers want the highest level of security possible. That is why we are incredibly methodical about this step, ensuring you can have complete peace of mind.

Step Three: Examine the right side

From the doors, we can then move onto the right side of the container. Shipping container modifications can include adding windows, installing plumbing and applying electronics, so this review will help us determine whether this will be possible on this side of the wall.

Our team carefully examine both the inside and outside of the wall, looking for signs of wear and tear, damage or areas of concern. They will also look for any unusual repairs that might have been made to the structural beams that could cause issues further down the line. Using a tool, they will tap the side walls to listen and feel for any hollow sounds that could indicate a problem in the structural integrity.

Step Four: Examine the left side

Once the right wall has been examined, we will then conduct the exact same tests on the opposite side of the wall. This will ensure we understand any areas of concern, signs of repairs and the structural integrity of that wall.

With this information, we can then determine which is the best wall to complete any modifications, such as adding windows. This is a vital part of the design process and ensures we are always delivering the very best products possible.

Step Five: Front Wall

Once we are happy the doors and walls are in good condition, the next step is to examine the front wall. This process is very similar to the right and left side checks, seeing us tap to find any strange sounds or hollow areas as well as checking for signs of wear or damage.

We will also ensure that all the blocks and vents are visible and working as designed as well as ensuring that the length of the container is accurate. Any anomalies here could indicate prior modifications that means it is not fit for purpose.

Step Six: Ceiling and roof

The next step is to then review the interior ceiling and external roof. We want to ensure that the height from the floor is accurate and that all blocks and vents are visible and working as designed. We will also review any areas of repair or signs of damage to ensure that the container is waterproof and will remain durable.

As we do with the walls, our team will then use a tool to tap the ceiling and examine any areas where there is a hollow or strange sound.

Step Seven: Review the floor

From there, the final check we make before making any kind of shipping container modification is to review the interior floor. This is one of the key aspects of modular building, so we want to ensure that it is the correct distance from the ceiling and is completely flat and uniform in height.

Our team will also carefully review the floor for any signs of damage or repair that might cause problems at a later date.

The build begins

Once we are happy that the storage container meets our rigorous tests and examination, we are then able to begin transforming it into whatever our customers desire!
